New Milestone Brings Company Closer to Full Commercial Adoption of Cost-Effective, Sustainable Solution for Thermoplastics

Date Released: Apr 06, 2015

ALPHARETTA, Ga., March 23, 2015 – Bylox™and Bylox™ HT Concentrated Additives from Genarex™ LLC have been certified as bio-based products by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Both bioadditives have a bio-based content of at least 98%, according to ASTM D6866 testing conducted by the USDA. Genarex made the announcement at NPE 2015: The International Plastics Showcase, March 23-27 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando (Booth S17065).

The USDA certification is a major milestone for Genarex, which is nearing full commercial introduction of its suite of bioadditives for a range of thermoplastic resins. “The USDA certification gives Bylox™ and Bylox™ HT critically important credibility and provides assurances to end users who seek sustainable solutions,” said Bob Montgomery, Vice President of Sales and Product Development for Genarex. “We can stand firmly behind our products and deliver to the marketplace a highly cost-effective solution that enables manufacturers to tap the rapidly growing demand for affordable ‘green’ products.”

Genarex’s Bylox™ and Bylox™ HT compounds – based on a heterogeneous blend of plant-based proteins and carbohydrates – are distinguished by low odor, easy processing, high thermal stability, and ductility. Bylox™ is the flagship product characterized by high ductility while Bylox™ HT is a high-performance option with a thermal processing window of up to 250°C and near-zero odor.

Both products can be blended with polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) at loadings up to 30% without sacrificing material performance. They can also be added to biodegradable polymers such as polybutyrate adipate terephthalate (PBAT), polylactic acid (PLA), and polyhydroxy alkanoates (PHA) at similar loading levels. Both Bylox™ and Bylox™ HT are available in masterbatch and powder form.

Genarex is working closely with potential end use customers and processors on material adoption in a broad range of applications including injection molded automotive components, extruded flexible PVC for building and construction, and extruded films for agricultural and mulch products. Genarex’s current manufacturing operation supplies large sample quantities to its existing customer base. The company expects to break ground on a new commercial-scale manufacturing facility in the near future.
